The Emperor Penguins

Becky "Lady Of" Steele — Sun, 27 Sep 2026 12:03:27 GMT

I was a creative child. Most of us were, if we were privileged enough to grow up in an environment that allowed or supported creativity. For some of us, school was that place.

Mannheim Elementary School was a U.S. Department of Defense School on Benjamin Franklin Village Army Base, near Mannheim, Germany. I was in the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program, which afforded me the chance to split away from the rest of my peers into a small group of other TAG students.

TAG class convened in small mobile trailer off the back of the school. The harsh fluorescent lighting was only made bearable because of the deliberate effort of our Frau. She decorated according to the season, and always made sure we had sweet treats, which she baked herself. She kept a small warmer on, slowly heating freshly peeled orange slices and spices to cozy up the space.

You are about to read my second ever book: The Emperor Penguins. My first book was The Me Book, shared in a series of posts from my early Substack archives that I never finished (part one, part two, part three).

The Emperor Penguins was written and illustrated by me, scribed by the Frau, and carefully ironed onto cotton cloth sheets, bound by a red cloth spine. Some of the words were cut off when it was wrapped into the spine, but if you allow your mind to morph back into your nine-year old self, you can easily fill in the gaps.

I read every book on penguins at my little school library. I could list all of the known variants of penguins to you, detailing their differences in size, dietary preferences, and which ones were bold enough to travel the furthest away.

The fact that penguins could not fly deeply resonated with me. It still does. A trip to Antarctica remains on my short list of things I intend to do as an adult, and the prolonged desire to make that voyage has as much to do with penguins as it has to do with my love of adventure and the pursuit of dark, horizon-to-horizon skies full of stars that cannot be seen unless one is in the southern hemisphere.

I am convinced that my love of penguins would’ve persisted beyond May 1993 had it not been for Jurassic Park releasing to theaters that next month. From that point forward, I was obsessed with dinosaurs.

This is a special artifact from my childhood. I hope it makes you smile today 🐧💛

Once, I

Becky "Lady Of" Steele — Mon, 14 Sep 2026 12:04:02 GMT

Once, I handed a $5 bill forward from the backseat to my boss's boss. He lowered the window while we were stopped, and handed it to the man holding a cardboard sign in the median.

“This is from the girl in the back." (I was 25 years old)

The man smiled, nodded, thanked me.

“Get a job!" my manager shouted.

The light turned green. He stared at me through the rear view mirror.

I did not stare back.

—

Once, I arranged special guard and accommodation before a job site visit to a prison. Two weeks before, I asked to be scheduled to visit when the inmates would not be there. One week before, I confirmed the inmates would not be there. Day before, a reminder.

Day of: I walked into the prison shower to measure water flow at their new low-flow, temper-proof shower heads, and nearly walked into a man who was showering. Naked. Slowly.

I was made to wait.

—

Once, I was a satellite operator. I could command those machines to take photos of themselves, of Earth, in real time. I could step outside and easily spot them, flying right over my head, in a sea of fixed stars.

Tonight, I counted more satellites than I saw five years ago. Many more. The dismal sprawl of humanity, no longer contained by our atmosphere.

I could not finish counting satellites before more surfaced above the horizon.

—

Once, I was taken aback. It doesn't phase me anymore.

Fade In Friday: Salt of the Sea

Becky "Lady Of" Steele — Fri, 31 Jul 2026 18:40:18 GMT

Hello, friends. This is the first in a new series called Fade In Friday.

What is “Fade In”? New screenwriters are taught to open their screenplay with the words “Fade In,” because stories often fade into view. The more screenplays I read, the less and less I see that, but most folks who write for film would likely agree that “Fade In” denotes the opening page of a screenplay.

I’m drawn to writing in the flash and micro-fiction genres because of their brevity (typically less than 1000 words for flash, less than 300 for micro), and for how much it pushes me to craft a clear, succinct, impactful story arc.

I’ll be using this series to get some practice in converting my fiction to film, find my flow in writing screenplays, and gather inspiring visuals for how I’d want my movie to look and feel if I were to film it.

Enjoy 🖤

Opening Page:

FADE IN:

EXT. COVE BEACH - DUSK

Waves catch the last gold light. Footprints track down through the sand to the water’s edge, where a bodyboard stands planted upright.

RILEY (20s), wetsuit half-zipped, crouches at the shoreline, cinching a leash around one ankle. They pause, watching the horizon, the sun low, the sky bruising purple.

Riley grins, tucks the board under one arm, and wades in.

CUT TO:

EXT. COVE - WATER - CONTINUOUS

Riley paddles into the swell, catches a wave, and rides it smoothly to shore. They stand as it breaks, sand pulling away beneath their feet in small rivers as the tide recedes.

Riley looks back out at the water, then up at the darkening sky. They wade back in.

They paddle out further than before, the shoreline shrinking behind them. The water swells, lifting them steadily upward. It doesn’t stop.

They crane their neck, searching for the crest of the wave. There isn’t one.

Their board slides backward along the face of the swell, pulled away from shore instead of toward it.

RILEY

No, no, no…

They dig their arms into the water, kicking hard, cutting sideways against the pull. The current doesn’t loosen. The shoreline keeps shrinking.

Ahead, jagged black rocks jut from the low tide, waves smashing white against them.

Riley grips the board tighter, curls their body around it, and braces.

Eyes close.

“You’ll be left behind,” they say. Force multiplier. More time for creativity. Exhaustion from the day. From hearing it everywhere, from everyone.

Livelihoods are being stolen. Taps are running dry. But sure: the IPOs will save us.

My body settles into bed. Subconsciousness swallows the thoughts. Finally, rest.

Eyes open.

Pitch black. Shallow breaths in a tight space. Knuckles scrape wood all around me. The new confinement dampens my scream.

How did I end up here? I was only trying to dream.

Wearing myself out, I surrender. Only the tears move. Gradually, peace.

Maybe it’s better this way.

The Twins

“Morning,” says a humanoid behind the counter, who pushes a few buttons that make coffee and a place setting appear. “Big day!”

“The day, Jess!” Tom says, “I still can’t believe I qualified.”

“I can,” Jess says. “You’re born to ride the waves! The usual?”

“Yep,” Tom nods.

Jess pushes more buttons. Breakfast materializes: eggs, sausage, and a bottle of mustard.

“Favorable conditions today?” asks Jess.

“Looks like it,” Tom agrees. “Waves look evenly dispersed over the first hundred parsecs. The Twins are in perfect gravitational stability.”

“Listen Tom,” Jess leans in, their solid black eyes searching for contact with his slit pupils. “You’ve been coming into this diner for over a year now. That pair of neutron stars… They’re unpredictable. I’ve given a last meal to more solar sailors than this planet has moons. Don’t be a hero, you hear me?”

Tom nods.

Jess stands upright, smiles with uncertainty, and walks away. Tom waves his wrist over the counter to pay for the breakfast tab, and leaves.

Moments later, Tom seals the spaceport hatch behind him, and the computer chimes on.

“All systems are nominal.”

“Copy that,” Tom says, checking gravity readings on the interferometer. He enters a series of commands at the helm, and the sailship slowly advances to the starting line. As it does, a race portal activates on the view screen.

“Good morning, sailors!” says the announcer. “Five minutes until launch.”

Tom and the computer make the vessel ready for sailing, just in time for a green orb in the distance to detonate.

“Go!” Tom shouts, grinning as he works the helm. The delicate, gold mesh solar sail unfurls from the mast, and the sailship thrusts forward.

“Velocity: 0.1c,” announces the computer. “0.2c. 0.3c.”

Tom notices the redshift of the slower ships as they streak behind him.

“Yes!” Tom exclaims. The ship gently vibrates, but Tom adjusts a few settings to settle the ship.

“0.4c.”

“Wow!” Tom shouts. He checks the beacons for the other competitors on the view screen to find that they’re far behind him.

The alarm on the interferometer sounds, breaking the excitement.

Tom checks the interferometer, and gasps.

“No,” he whispers, as panic sets in. “Computer, project the next four waves…”

The view screen display shows three steady waveforms, then a peak that is too large or the screen. A gravity swell.

Tom sits down, and takes his hands off the helm.

“Computer, time to impact?”

“Thirty seconds.”

Tom shakes his head in disbelief. He’s lost all control of the vessel. The neutron stars are unstable, throwing gravity swells across kiloparsecs. He’s not the fastest. He’s the only one to launch!

“Four seconds to impact. Three. Two. One.”

The sailship capsizes as space and time expand, then contract. Everything goes black.

“Morning,” says a humanoid behind the counter. “Big day!”

“The day, Jess!” Tom says.
