Yeah Clayface has always been a stellar Batman villain. The initial Animated Series run had his Feats Of Clay as a two parter and were the 4th and 5th episodes. Tragic character, but also one of the coolest to look at and the most promising.
I was a Marvel kid and missed out on much of the DC world, but I’m really glad I wasn’t sure how his story would end up. It helped to preserve empathy and made room for more understanding of the character.
I'll say that much about DC: the rogues gallery of villains tend to have much more tragic backstory than the marvel ones. Comes with the whole Detective Comics thing especially. Usually if they are a Batman villain, they have a damn solid reason for turning their back on the world and thriving in chaos.
